Quick Tip: Create a Damask Pattern Using the MadPattern Illustrator Template

Damask is a style of pattern that is easy to recognize, but not so easy to replicate. In this tutorial you will learn that with the right tools, anybody can make their own damask pattern that looks just as good as the ones you see on fancy hotel wallpaper, with the help of a template file. The template used in this tutorial can be downloaded for free from: http://www.madpattern.com/ Recognize that: The symmetry is specified as CM (more information on Wikipedia – Wallpaper ) The image only has two colors The main components of the image lie within a triangle which is then mirrored and moved to generate the pattern (see image below) Notice how anything that lies along the right edge of the white triangle gets mirrored, and anything that lies along the bottom left edge of the white triangle gets mirrored and moved vertically (so that it appears at the top left edge). Noticing these features is what gives you the power to create this type of pattern.

Now in 2010, they have a new website design and I was invited to help them with the background image. I was stoked, especially because they wanted to keep a colorful effect but with something new.

Create an Abstract Design with Patterns in Photoshop

I’ve just finished up another little digital art experiment where I set out to build something cool and abstract out of Photoshop patterns and simple shapes. Follow this walkthrough as I take you through the steps I took to recreate this detailed design with nothing more than gradient and pattern effects. The design itself is made up of a range of concentric circles, with each group varying in size. Each circle is given a base colour from 6 core swatches, then gradients and pattern fills add detail and depth.

6 Elements of Design for Striking Photographs

What makes a striking photo? Often, it’s merely ordinary things composed in an ordinary manner. That’s because they always tend to have a single theme or idea, and because clutter is kept to a minimum. They are simple, true, and sincere.
