On Assignment: Photographing the Pope in Italy

Photographing the pope as a photojournalist is similar to covering other major diplomats – like presidents and royalty. However, each assignment is different and brings individual challenges, customs, and red tape. In this article, I’ll explain my experiences with photographing Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, Italy. Tools of the Trade Photojournalism doesn’t require the flagship lines of the DSLR market like the Canon 1D Mark IV or Nikon D3S.

Dealing with outdoor light might seem easy, and certainly plenty of rules of thumb are passed around regarding outdoor photography. Photographers might refer to the Sunny 16 rule or the saying “f/8 and be there.” However, it is more important that you know how and why the light works in your photographs than what exposure to use. The obvious problem with rules of thumb is that they only get you started. What about light underneath clouds or shade?

In Infrared Photography , the film or image sensor used is sensitive to infrared light. The part of the spectrum used is referred to as near-infrared to distinguish it from far-infrared, which is the domain of thermal imaging. Wavelengths used for photography range from about 700 nm to about 900 nm. To record the “invisible light” has always been an intriguing and fascinating experiment for photographers.

This past week had a lot of photography roundups, everything from out-of-bounds style to tilt-shift photography. Also, there were two interesting tutorials on comic and cartoon style illustrations.
